Where
Situating ourselves at St Anne’s House, we will be hosted and supported by Bricks, Bristol, a community led organisation currently running a community space with its residents; following and celebrating Take A Part’s own action group model of working.
The building is home to 100+ tenants from the creative, artistic, community and volunteer sector. Including Bristol Cooperative Gym, Theatre Rehearsal Space by MAYK, artist project space, studios, coworking, office space, play therapy, social prescribing, mental health nurses, an alternative art school, a sauna and a mushroom farm.
Curatorial Framing
Take A Part is delighted to present the fifth biennial symposium Social Making: Actions for Agency – Generative Practice During Paradigm Shifts, taking place on the 10th and 11th of October 2024 at St Anne’s House; Bricks, Bristol.
Social Making aims to bring together artists, curators, community members, commissioners, policy makers, audiences, researchers and anyone with an interest in social practice in the arts. For Take A Part, social practice is collaborative and puts people at the heart of the artwork, and it is this spirit that we bring to our symposium. Each iteration of the symposium has been different but we always strive to move to a more active engagement with our delegates rather than the traditional conference experience. For 2024, we plan to acknowledge the paradigm shifts currently taking place globally in our post-pandemic world and want to lead on supporting communities to shift practice —a call for new forms of working.
With a global erosion of older and inherited forms of democracy, antiquated and colonial models of funding and economics and urgent forms of climate justice emerging we need more accountability ourselves and action what we need. To do this, people need tools to support shifts in practice. What are the forms of making, performing, sharing, supporting and delivering that we can share and develop within our field of work?
Over the 10th and 11th of October 2024, we will welcome 125 delegates from regional, national and international areas of practice together to discuss the global paradigm shift and share approaches for togetherness and grassroots actions within this focussed on democratic forms of decision making/delivery that build capacity paired with environmental activism models.
